I grew up a military brat with five (that's right, five) sisters. Moving every few years and sharing a home (not to mention a bathroom) with so many siblings, I developed a very different relationship to any space that was mine alone. My space was my sanctuary, a place for me to relax and be myself, not just the new girl in town. Unlike most people, I have always loved unpacking. The act of arranging my things in my new space to suit my needs has always been a delight. To this day, I unpack absolutely everything within two days of moving to a new place because I’m so eager to make my new house my home.
One thing moving with the military did not teach me was the value of discarding what you don’t really need. Each time I moved as an adult, I carted around even more possessions just because they were there, not because I ever took the time to consider them. This kept up until 2015 when my best friend gave me a copy of Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up which, as promised, changed my life forever!
I devoured the book on a Friday and completed the KonMari Method™ in my home that weekend. While tidying up my space, I let go of so many physical and emotional things that were holding me back, taking up my scarce energy and precious time. Organizing my home with Marie’s method honed my sense of joy, lightened my spirit, and allowed me to bring much needed change and new experiences to my life.
After my tidying marathon, I explored this life in a way I never had before. I completed my yoga teacher training. I learned to oil paint. I traveled throughout Thailand for three weeks. I let go of negative relationships and opened myself up to deeper connections. I quit a lucrative, but unfulfilling job in international finance and development to make space for work that truly sparked joy.
When I joy-checked Washington, D.C. and found that living there no longer sparked joy, my husband and I packed up our things to move back to the land of his birth: North Carolina. We are so thankful and excited to be living in Raleigh, closer to our families and pursuing what sparks joy for us every day. I am so happy to have created my ideal home here and for the chance to help others do the same!
As a Bronze-level Certified KonMari Consultant, I have successfully completed the KonMari Method™ in my own home, as approved by Marie Kondo and her team at KonMari Media, Inc. I completed the official KonMari™ Consultant Training Seminar in New York City, led by Marie Kondo alongside Certified Consultants from the U.S. and Japan. I have spent well over 150 hours tidying with a multitude of clients.
Prior to the seminar, I spent 8 months in Washington, D.C. apprenticing under Jenny Albertini, a Gold level consultant and official KonMari Method™ Trainer, one of the first KonMari Consultants certified outside of Japan. Since moving to Raleigh in early 2018, I have been working steadily with clients to create homes that spark joy throughout North Carolina. In addition to my experience as a professional organizer, I have nearly 10 years experience as a project management consultant in finance and international development.
Working with Jenny and her clients, I saw my own potential, my own ideal life, to become a KonMari Consultant who helps others find clarity and calm just like I did. My time with Jenny and my work with clients since have shown me what truly sparks joy for me - helping people free themselves from the burdens they’ve been dealing with in their homes, so they can truly start living their best life by finding their joy.
